Sports Coaches’ OutReach

Sports Coaches’ OutReach (www.score.org.za) was founded in 1991 in Khayelitsha outside Cape Town in South Africa.  Started by a former Olympic athlete, it was a response to the critical situation faced by youth in impoverished townships in the country.  SCORE’s mission has remained the same: to set up sustainable sports and recreation activities for disadvantaged children and youth, and to use sport as a medium to teach life skills, empower people and build community.

SCORE is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation, which recruits international and local volunteers to teach physical education, coach sport and train instructors in underprivileged communities.  For SCORE volunteers, sport is a powerful tool for building bridges between people, a shared international language that cuts across social and cultural barriers, a dynamic activity that forges new friendships.

SCORE’s Objectives:

* Provide New Sports Opportunities
* Train Trainers
* Develop Sports Partnerships
* Promote Friendship and Fair Play
* Give Children a Chance to Play and Learn
* Promote Voluntarism and develop Role Models

SCORE volunteers achieve these objectives through implementing a variety of programs.  In each community to which SCORE is invited a comprehensive plan is put in place, based on the needs of the people and their constant input and evaluation of SCORE’s work.  Volunteers work on any number of the following SCORE Projects:

1 - Physical Education
Qualified volunteers assist in the implementation of the subject in primary school timetables, train and assist teachers, and help in the process of lesson planning and evaluation.  Volunteers also provide follow-up support, conduct workshops and share innovative new lesson ideas and materials for large classes with little equipment.  All learners have the opportunity to participate at least once a week.

2 - School Sport
Volunteer coaches and trainers work with schoolteachers and learners to introduce new sports at schools and broaden participation.  Working together with volunteers, the teachers coach school teams, participate in friendly matches, leagues and tournaments, and organise school sports days.

3 - SCORE for ALL
This is a regular mini-sports festival for children, youth, and anyone in the community who wants to come along and play.  Held on a public space SCORE volunteers and local enthusiasts organise a wide range of games, sports and recreational activities for participants, who often number in the hundreds.

4 - InterPlay
SCORE believes sport is a dynamic and powerful way to bring people together.  Volunteers organise sports events, mini-festivals, and inter-school or community matches to bring children, youth and adults from different backgrounds together on the sports field - to play together, to share sport, and to learn about one another.  From the townships to the suburbs, from children on the street to children in private schools, this is the program that makes nation building and friendship through sport a reality on the community level.

5 - SpecialSport
This project targets both physically and mentally challenged persons, young and old.  SCORE volunteers involve everyone in activities, whatever their disability, and through this broad based participation and stimulation program they build skills and self-confidence.  Volunteers work in schools, homes, and protective workshops to train trainers and facilitators as well as conducting training workshops. Activities bringing differently abled together and promoting mainstreaming are ongoing highlights.

6 - ClubSport
Clubs are the foundation stone of community sport, and SCORE volunteers work hard with newly established teams or interested groups to structure their activities and assist them to operate as a club.  Volunteers train coaches as well as participants, and offer workshops in sports leadership and basic aspects of sports administration or coaching.

7 - U-Go-Girl!
One of SCORE’s ongoing objectives is to increase equity in sport by increasing participation of girls and women.  Programs focus on introducing girls to historically male-dominated sports, developing girls’ and women’s sports clubs, ensuring female representation on sports committees, and delivering specific sports leadership and assertiveness training workshops.  There is also an annual SCORE Women in Sport Festival.

8 - SCORE-Leaders
SCORE encourages, trains and supports community members, especially youth, who volunteer their time in their own communities to organise sports activities, support school sport, and assist clubs and committees.  These volunteers are the foundation for sustainability and perfect role models, who often take up leadership positions and provide a voice for the community.

9  Sport Business
SCORE is developing a new training concept that brings business principles to the management of sport at community level.  The key to sustainable sports structures is the sound management of resources.  Sport Business assists clubs and sports committees to work more professionally, develop business plans, generate income and create jobs  all to the benefit of sport and the broader community.

10.  Sports & Recreation Facilities
One of the greatest needs in communities is for safe and accessible places to play.  SCORE is building basic outdoor, low-maintenance facilities in communities and provides fixed sports equipment, like goals and basketball hoops.  Facilities provide a centre for community activity and involvement and a space for new sports and games to become a part of healthy community life.

The Importance of Local Ownership...
In each community in which SCORE works volunteers seek to establish or strengthen local sports organising committees.  These committees are crucial to the sustainability of local clubs and sports initiatives.  Training and ongoing assistance are provided to build capacity and create links with other sports structures, as well as to organise sports festivals that involve the broader community.  SCORE asks each committee to appoint a community contact person who serves as a link to our organisation and supports and guides the volunteer and the SCORE activities.

The Importance of Partnership...
SCORE forges partnerships with federations to assist them in implementing programs and to extend their capacity.  SCORE works with national and international federations, and cooperates with the other national and provincial sports structures in South Africa, including government departments, the National Olympic Committee of South Africa, and the South African Sports Commission.  Sharing resources and extending networks builds links that underpin sustainable activities.  SCORE also forges partnerships with other organisations active in community development, using sport as a vehicle to pass on messages relevant to other areas of community life, for example: AIDS/HIV awareness and children’s rights.
